Google Search Console Removes the Page Experience Report

Over 18 months ago, Google announced plans to retire the page experience report from Google Search Console within the “coming months.” After a lengthy wait, this feature has finally been removed from the platform.
The announcement was made on LinkedIn, rather than X, where Google confirmed the removal of the page experience report. Here’s what Google shared:
“We’re removing the Page Experience report in Search Console. This report summarized data from the Core Web Vitals and HTTPS reports, which will remain accessible. The decision to remove this page was made to simplify navigation within Search Console and reduce unnecessary clutter. However, we still encourage you to prioritize delivering a good page experience to your users and to monitor your site’s performance using the CWV and HTTPS reports.”
The report is no longer visible under the “experience” section of Search Console. While Google framed the decision as an effort to streamline the platform, some speculate the real reason is the excessive focus SEOs placed on page experience as a ranking factor, despite its minimal impact on rankings. Nevertheless, Google reiterated the importance of providing a positive page experience for users.
A Brief History of the Page Experience Report
The page experience report debuted in Search Console in April 2021, initially targeting mobile pages. A desktop version followed in January 2022 alongside the desktop version of the page experience algorithm. Now, as of 2024, this feature has been removed entirely. Danny Sullivan noted that it will be replaced by a new page linking to Google’s general guidance on page experience.
In December 2023, Google also retired several other mobile-related tools, including the mobile usability report (introduced in 2016), the mobile-friendly test tool, and its corresponding API. Despite these removals, Google emphasized the continued importance of mobile usability, stating:
“Mobile usability remains critical for users, who are increasingly reliant on mobile devices. This focus is still reflected in our page experience guidance. However, over the past decade, many alternative tools for evaluating mobile usability, such as Chrome’s Lighthouse, have become widely available.”
Mixed Messages from Google
Google’s statements regarding the importance of page experience and Core Web Vitals have often been inconsistent. Initially, Google denied confirming these elements as direct ranking factors, only to later affirm that Core Web Vitals play a role in rankings. This inconsistency has fueled ongoing confusion, especially in light of updates to the helpful content guidance and page experience documentation.
Clarifying the distinction between ranking signals and systems, Danny Sullivan previously explained, “It just meant these weren’t ranking systems but rather signals used by other systems.” Despite these explanations, the debate about their significance continues among SEOs.
